Cupcake-Powered Radio

You know we love the KEXP. What's not to love? Great bands. Great DJs. And it's all made possible by you, the oh-so-savvy listener. Well, you and all the sweet Seattle businesses that support KEXP by underwriting. If ever there was a win-win situation, underwriting for KEXP would have to be the win-winniest. We hear our favorite fellow local businesses mentioned on KEXP all the time, and it just makes us feel good. All of us community-minded music lovers pooling our resources to keep the tunes a comin'.

Recently, our buddy Rob over at KEXP asked Jody to record a testimonial about why she underwrites for KEXP...and has since day one! That's 7 years of cupcake-powered radio, people. Super. Sweet.

Rock on, KEXP. Here's to 7 more years of cupcake love headed your way.

Famous foodies think our cupcakes are the best...EVER!

Jane & Michael Stern...foodies on the go.

And they should know. They travel the country seeking out the very best the US has to offer the palette. We could not be more excited about the sweet review we got from Jane and Michael Stern, a pair of road bound foodies dubbed "America’s leading authorities on the culinary delights to be found while driving" by Newsweek.

Well, they found themselves a clear favorite here in Seattle...our cupcakes! Mm hmm. Rated "Worth driving to from anywhere," Jane said our Salted Caramel "THE BEST cupcake I’ve ever eaten." Michael had equally glowing reviews for our goods on their site. And they both loved the Velvet Elvis, too. Well now, how could you not?

Their only complaint...our cupcakes are "way too fresh." We'll take it!

Listen to them tell all on NPR's Splendid Table.

Candidate Survivor: Voting with your thumbs!

You may have noticed that we at Cupcake Royale are superfans of the awesome squad known as Washington Bus. What's not to love? Politics, youth, jokes, rap songs, a killer blog, and cool events. The cool event du jour...Candidate Survivor.

What is Candidate Survivor, you ask? Well, it is only "the biggest, best, and possibly sexiest candidate forum of the year." Ooo, that sounds hot. You do not wanna miss that. You, yes YOU, get to vote (via mobile phone) your least favorite city council and city attorney candidates off stage, and you get to support the ones you like. Win win!

It's FREE.
It's all ages.
And there's a bar (w/ID)

TUESDAY JULY 28th | 7-9PM | SHOWBOX AT THE MARKET | 1426 1st AVE

Go. Practice flexing those super sexy voting muscles (in this case, apparently, your thumbs) as primary time approaches.

For more info, check out Hella Bus, one of our most favorite things to read when we're supposed to be designing sassy new cupcake paraphernalia. Kidding! Sorta...

NBC Nightly News does Cupcake Royale

This is what it looks like when Steve Bazell, Chief Science & Health Correspondent from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, comes to Cupcake Royale to interview Jody about health care.

NOTE: Unlike our White House-themed fun with PhotoShop, this photo is not doctored. This is exactly how it went down yesterday here in Ballard.

On your far left you have a big time TV cameraman, immortalizing the cupcake goodness on celluloid. To his right, in the foreground, we have the one and only Jody Hall. Toward the back in the nice looking suit, we have none other than Steve Bazell. And finally, rockin' her sweet blue Vert shirt and some short denim cutoffs, you see froster extraordinaire, Ali Masterson. Ali was also filmed riding her cycle stallion down Market Street, her denim cutoffs topped off with a hot pink helmet.

Safety first. Killer style a very close second.

Don't be alarmed by the denim cutoffs. Ali is not a nevernude. Free cupcake to the FIRST person who posts the name of someone who IS a nevernude. HINT: It is exactly what it sounds like.

Anyway, in case you haven't heard, Jody Hall is REALLY into affordable, quality health care for all Americans, and she's been working hard to make it happen. First, she spent a year and a half traveling down to Oly on behalf of the Washington Small Business for Secure Health Care Coalition, a project of our pals over at Washington CAN! After spreading the good word around this Washington, she was invited to go to THAT Washington. The one where Obama lives. She went to his house, actually. The White one. She met with Nancy-Ann DeParle and Larry Summers about health care costs for small business owners. Check it HERE.

And now, NBC is hot to her game and came on out to feature her for the news. We'll let you know when it airs. As of now, could be a week...could be a month.

Wanna be a part of all this health care fun? We know you do. And that's why you're gonna join us in the sun on Saturday as we march from Pratt Park to Westlake Center in the name of Health Care for All in 2009. Jody will be there, and so will her baby mama, Kelly, and their baby boy, Truman. And so will Patty Murray. And so will Jim McDermott. So will I. And hopefully, so will you.

Now is the time. Get involved. Be heard. Make it happen.

WHAT: March for Health Care for all in 2009
WHEN: Saturday May 30 @ 12:30
WHERE: Starting at Pratt Park and ending at Westlake Center
WHO: You. Me. Us. Spread the word!

See you THERE.

ARTcakes: Dan Conner lays the smack down on reality TV

Before there was Reality TV, there were real TV characters. Characters, you say? You mean like celebrities who wanna lose weight? Or some beautiful well-to-do young people whose personal lives we cannot go one minute without hearing about?

No.

char·ac·ter - the personality or part which an actor recreates

Thanks Merriam-Webster, for clearing that up. And thanks Gretchen McAllister for hanging your super sweet art show in our West Seattle café entitled, Men I Love. Gretchen, (who just so happens to have a day job in our Ballard café putting smiles on the faces of all who are lucky enough to get their morning cup from her,) has created a body of work here that harkens back to a day when there were actors on TV playing roles that were meant to actually connect with viewers in some way, shape, or form.

Whether it was Dan Conner working yet another dry wall job to pay the small town Illinois bills during the recession of the early nineties, or Lloyd Dobler exchanging his heart for Diane Court's pen (ouch), these fine men were keepin' it real.

Ok, that last one was a movie, but you get the idea.

The show is up through the end of the month, and West Seattle ArtWalk is Thursday, April 9th from 6-9 pm. Resist the temptation to stay home and watch Make me a Supermodel, and get on out and look at some art!
