Cupcakes love equal rights!

For those of you who noticed that we were markedly absent from last year's Pride parade (and the one before that...and the one before that...eep), fear not! We are back this year and a rarin' to go! We just finished our parade registration and have commenced with the brainStorm of the Century! (Seriously, why does Stephen King keep coming up in our posts? Free cupcake to the first person who proves they know what that means.)

To be honest, we have been shirkin' a tad for the past couple years in regards to our involvement in Seattle Pride. Apparently we were busy baking cupcakes or something. Go figure. Anyway, we can't think of a better time to thrust our cakes into equal rights overdrive than NOW! So get on board, and inform yourself!

Thanks to everyone who voted for us in Seattle Magazine's Reader's Choice Awards for their April Best Restaurants 2009 issue! We're honored, to say the least, and proud to be in the company of our coffee roasting cohorts, Stumptown Coffee (Best Indie Coffee Shop), as well as the fine folks of Macrina Bakery (Best Bakery), who provide us with super tasty breakfast pastries each morning.

Hmm, looks like we have the best cupcakes, the best coffee, and the best pastries. How about that.

Well, we definitely have the best customers, and we want to say thanks! So, on April 1st, we're giving out FREE babycakes of the month. Because they are clearly the true heroes behind our April Cupcake of the Month...

Honey Peanut Brittle!

What we've done here is take some delicious Pacific Northwest blackberry honey and transform it into a mouth-watering buttercream.

Then, we took some more of that delicious Pacific Northwest blackberry honey, threw some salted peanuts in there, wiggled our magical cupcake noses, and out came honey peanut brittle.

That's right. Honey. Peanut. Brittle.

Finally, we swirled the honey buttercream onto our vanilla buttercake, and crumbled the honey peanut brittle all over it. Good God y'all!

The perfect combination of sweet and salty honey peanut goodness.

Bzzz.

Mister K. Pities the Fool Who Misses Out on Irish Whiskey Maple Cupcakes

No, that's not a typo. Mister K is a Yelper who recently visited Cupcake Royale in Ballard for a Salted Caramel cupcake (which she loved) and was won over by our Irish Whiskey Maple while she was here. The above photo is of her cat, Jimmy Rabies, eyeballin' the boozey cupcake bounty. Poor Jimmy, cupcakes are for humans.

Mister K says:

"The added bonus was the cupcake of the month in honor of St. Patrick's Day, the Irish Whiskey Maple. If you think that sounds great, it is probably at least twice as good as you are imagining. I feel sorry for people who don't make it in time to try one."

We couldn't have said it better. You've all got exactly 11 days left to try it for yourself.

Stranger writer Megan Seling would spend her last dime with us.

In case you haven't picked up this week's Stranger yet, the focus is...the economy! In this handy dandy Economic Survival Guide, the Stranger staff shares which restaurants they are continuing to spend their money at, even though their money is scarce. Megan Seling lists us as one of just three places she is continuing to frequent in these freaky money times. Her other two picks were La Isla and Pho Than Brothers. Go Ballard!

Stephen King done did clowns wrong.

The results are in, and it seems clowns are in need of a serious PR effort. A large chunk of people either can't get Stephen King's famous clown from It out of their minds, or they were permanently scarred by some unutterable childhood clown incident.

Cute 36%
A mix of the two 16%

Here are some of the more insightful comments from each side.

CREEPY

• 9 out of 10 children hate clowns. Four of those pretend they don't.

• I don't trust anyone who has to paint a smile on their face.

• Clowns are creepy...Read "It" by Stephen King... *shudder*

CUTE

• They totally remind this old-timer of the cupcakes he had in elementary school! Very cute.

• In this circumstance-CUTE. Very Birthday traditional.

• Kitschy and just a little bit inappropriate but also like a circus or fair.

IN BETWEEN

• Creepy, but in a yummy way.

Wait...that last comment is a little creepy in and of itself.

Well, if neither cupcakes nor Giulietta Masina is enough to win the masses over, it seems the case for clowns is hopeless. But for those of you who still see clowns as the lovable laughmongers they were meant to be, we're gonna keep the clown toppers around.

The Great Cupcake Divide

Ok, so maybe this is not quite as important as the current American political divide, or the continental divide, or even learning to divide, for those readers who happen to be in third grade, but there is an issue here at Cupcake Royale that has proven so thoroughly divisive that it seems it may never be settled.

Clowns. Cute or Creepy?

Specifically, clowns on cupcakes, but we would be remiss in not acknowledging that the whole clowns-on-cupcakes dispute obviously stems from the larger clown issues everyone apparently has. So, while this sugar-fueled discussion may not make it to the lectern at any nationally televised debates, we cupcakers still want closure. Cute or creepy?

A little tootin' our own horn never hurt anybody, now did it?

Well, technically, someone else tooted the horn for us, and we're just sharing her brilliant insights. Turns out, Kate from San Francisco thinks our cupcakes are

"the best cupcakes i've had, hands down. i've hunted down the favorites from nyc to sf, but these kill."

We love whiskey. We love maple. So, we baked ‘em together into one magically delicious morsel of cupcake goodness.
